On Wednesday, India chose to abstain from a UN General Assembly vote on a resolution demanding that Israel end its presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory within 12 months. The resolution passed with 124 countries in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions, including India.

Other countries that abstained included Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Israel and the United States were among those who voted against the resolution, which is called “Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice on the Legal Consequences of Israel’s Policies and Practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Including East Jerusalem, and the Illegality of Israel’s Continued Presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

The resolution demands that Israel “end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory without delay,” setting a 12-month deadline. It also criticizes Israel for ignoring its obligations under international law and UN resolutions, and calls for accountability and reparations for any damages caused by its actions.
