Modi’s trip to the US will kick off with the Quad Leaders’ Summit, hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. He will be joined by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week during Modi’s three-day visit to the U.S. Although Trump criticized India for high import tariffs, he called Modi a “fantastic man.”
PM Modi will visit the U.S. from September 21 to 23. At a town hall in Flint, Michigan, Trump said, “Modi is fantastic. A lot of these leaders are fantastic,” while also expressing concern about India’s high tariffs.
Trump also talked about trade policies, saying, “India is a big abuser… They use their position against us. Brazil is tough, and China is the toughest, but we were handling China with tariffs.”
He added, “If anyone charges us more, we charge them the same. This will lead to free trade again or at least bring in a lot of money.”
Trump, who is competing with Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, did not give more details about his meeting with Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi did not comment on Trump’s remarks.
During his visit, Modi will attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by President Joe Biden, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Modi will also speak at a community event in Long Island on September 22 and at the Summit of the Future at the UN in New York on September 23.
Modi’s visit comes just before the U.S. presidential election on November 5.
